Hungry for Summer: Why Piscataquis Kids Need You Now

Updated: Jun 4

While summer should mean freedom, fun, and full bellies, the reality is starkly different for many children in our region.

Maine leads New England in child hunger. Here in Piscataquis County, we rank third in all of New England and eighth in the entire Northeast for food insecurity among children. That means hundreds of local kids are facing summer with empty cupboards.

When school meals pause for the summer, families feel the gap. And in our rural region, that gap can stretch wide. Families who rely on school food programs must stretch already-tight budgets even further.

That’s where Piscataquis Regional Food Center comes in. Over the summer, we continue to welcome Piscataquis families to shop for healthy, nourishing food—no questions asked. We’re also proud to support the TFL Read & Feed program, which brings books and food to local communities throughout the summer months.

But summer is also when donations drop—and that’s where you come in.

Your gift today will help stock our shelves and fill Afterschool Special packs with food that fuels play, learning, and growing.

Because no child in Piscataquis County should go hungry—no matter the season.

Let’s make this a summer of nourishment, not need.
