Introduction to Mindful Eating
What is Mindful Eating? Mindful eating is in-the-moment attention to what food and drink you are putting in your body, and how it makes you feel including the signals your body sends about taste, pleasure, and fullness. And don’t forget, this is without judgment. Just notice how it makes you feel. It can include the process of buying, preparing, and serving your food as well as eating it. Why is Mindful Eating important? Studies show that by paying close attention as you eat to the feel and flavors, and to how the food makes your body feel, you can learn to enjoy both your food and the experience of eating more. This can make your digestion better, keep you full with less food, and help you make wiser choices about what you eat in the future. It can also help you free yourself from unhealthy habits around food and eating. How to Begin? Over the next year we will explore different ways to improve your mindfulness around eating. To start with, this month, begin to pay attention to your current habits around food. Perhaps start a journal (sample below) or make notes on a calendar. Do you eat in the car on your way to something else? Do you plan a meal and sit down to eat or do you often grab a bite while standing up? Do you usually sit in front of the TV while you eat (and sometimes realize afterwards that you didn’t even taste the food)? Do you often eat on the run? Do you eat mostly quick, prepared food or do you spend time making something the way you like it? Do you snack to relieve stress, or to cope with unpleasant emotions such as sadness, anxiety, loneliness, or boredom? It is really important that as you collect this information, you do this simply to gather information WITHOUT JUDGMENT! Remember, we all have eating habits that, from time to time, are unhealthy. The goal is to understand ourselves better and with time to improve our relationship with food and our bodies. Let’s enjoy this! I am Lesley Fernow, and I will be offering in-person opportunities to develop your mindful eating practice. Please let us know whether you would be interested in a group mindfulness session oriented around food once a month. I offer a free mindfulness meditation class weekly on Thursdays at 11am at Central Hall Commons, 152 East Main St. Dover-Foxcroft. Beginners are welcome.
