Garden in a Box
Container Gardening Learning Series
Help from our Garden Coaches
Due to COVID-19, the project looks a little different than we'd planned on. Garden coaches are unable to visit homes, and we are not holding workshops. Thank you for your understanding during these uncertain times. Materials have been delivered to gardeners, and they continue to be supported by Garden Coaches virtually! We hope to migrate back to our original project intentions for the 2021 program.
Garden in a Box is a container gardening pilot project that we began planning for in January of 2020. The idea for Garden in a Box came about through UMaine's Cooperative Extension in Piscataquis County's "One Tomato" project.
We saw how much people loved learning to grow and care for their tomato plants! It not only stimulated intergenerational connection and learning, but also provided people with fresh food.
The idea became a reality when we received grant funding from the Quimby Family Foundation. We are piloting the project with fifteen Gardeners, and two Garden Coaches.
Participants are invited to attend workshops focused on growing food in containers, pest management, harvesting, seed-saving, and more. They are given 15-gallon cloth pots, a choice of locally grown seedlings, binders full of tips and program materials, and they have Garden Coaches available by phone and for instructional home visits!
Our goal is to set participants up for success and generate enthusiasm for growing their own veggies year after year, by providing them with the all of the resources, materials, education and guidance they need to get started. See our Youtube channel for recorded workshops!
