Bees are scary but good for you!

I love going to the Farmers Market. They have really good food, they give me Veggie Vouchers with my Passport to get my own fruits and veggies so I don't have to share with my brother, and they also teach us about stuff.

Last week they taught us about bees. I have always thought bees were scary, I mean they sting you! But even though they may be scary, they need our help to live. And without bees, we wouldn't be able to live either because they make sure that all the flowers and stuff turn into fruits and veggies. They are called pollinators. And if we didn't have pollinators we wouldn't have food to eat. This week we not only got to learn about bees but also learned about using nature to help nature. I made a bee house to help bees make food for me. I am going to enter my bee house at the 4H booth in the fair!

Guess what? The kids are having too much fun enjoying the warmer weather and mud so they will not be writing this week. Instead your favorite VISTA, TMak, is here to talk about kids and volunteering. As you may have noticed, my kids are pretty active in volunteering. They began volunteering with me when they were still in baby carriers strapped to my chest or back! My son, Jasper, has memories of me coming to volunteer in his classroom with Lilly babbling on my back in the carrier. PBS Parents has a great article about kids and volunteering that I want to share with you. It has a lot of great tips and ideas to share about how to get your kids involved with volunteering. Click here to read the article, but here are my favorite parts of what it says: 1) Be a role model. We can't tell our kids to go be volunteers if we aren't giving of ourselves. It seems like a pretty straight forward concept, but we need to teach our kids how to volunteer. Choose some volunteer jobs you can do together with your kids! It's a win/win--family time and helping out. 2) I just alluded to it above--make it fun! Volunteering isn't meant to be a chore, it's meant to give back to an organization or community, and, let's face it, it usually feels really good to know you have made a difference. Pass it on! 3) Think Beyond Volunteering. How do you share with your kids about social issues, or community projects that need volunteers to be sustainable? I'm proud of my two beautiful children, and all the other kids and adults in our community, who come together and share their time, knowledge, and skills to make things happen and GET. THINGS. DONE. With Friendship, TMak

Hi everyone, I wanted to share with you about Winter Carnival. I had so much fun making the games and helping out even though my mom pretty much made me. Winter Carnival is this big event that PR Food Center is going to do every year. They wanted to make a really fun day that families could come to and raise money so they can keep doing the stuff they do there, like getting food to people who can't leave their houses. My brother Jasper, Cece, and some other friends made and painted all the games and signs for the Winter Carnival over my spring break. The news even came and did a story about it and I was on the TV! Then Mom said Jasper and I had to help at Winter Carnival. At first I didn't want to do it, but then I found out we got to be the first to try out the tubes and the Foosball Arena! That was my favorite part. Foosball was really fun! It was a little weird for me at first being the youngest volunteer. At first I didn't think people knew I was there to help, but then Mr. Steve gave me a volunteer vest and it was pretty cool. I was really happy watching all the kids play the games and seem happy with their families. Even though my Mom won't be working here next year, I hope we still get to help out with Winter Carnival. Love, Lilly
