What VISTA Means to Me

I'm sitting here at my desk reflecting upon my Year of Service which is rapidly coming to a close here at the Food Center. It is hard to share with you all the things I have learned, the programs we have built up, the people, the organizations we support...I could go on and on. When Erin first spoke to me about becoming an Americorps VISTA and serving at Piscataquis Regional Food Center, I thought I knew a lot about food insecurity and poverty. When I first started here and introduced myself, I said I was a Super Hero wearing a VISTA t-shirt. 9 or 10 months later, I will tell you that it isn't me that is the Super Hero, it's the volunteers who keep organizations like this going. It's the

Wednesdays With Whitney (or Katie!)

Today's special guest writer is Katie Davenport, Dietetic Intern from UMO, who is currently interning with our very own Whitney! Question: What are good alternatives to the high-sugar cold drinks, like slushies and frappes, to beat the heat in the summer? Before talking about how to cut back on sugar, let’s discuss why we should limit the amount of sugar we eat and drink. Excess sugar is known to be a major cause of obesity and chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer. Not only does extra sugar harm your body, it can also affect your mind. Sugar can make you feel sluggish, groggy, moody, or depressed. Often, when you cut back on sugar, you feel a lot better both mentally and

Food Center Spotlight: Evie--Our Summer VISTA

Hey Everyone! My name is Evelyn but I mostly go by Evie. I’m the new summer VISTA at the PRFC, working as a graphic design & marketing associate. As a recent graduate with a BFA in Graphic Design & Digital Media, I am very excited to work alongside TMak, and assist in curating a clean and professional new look for PR Food Center. That means establishing a style guide for marketing materials, streamlining the website for user experience, and creating cohesive graphics; all for the sake of brand consistency, so that you and everyone else can easily identify the Piscataquis Regional Food Center! As I said before, I’ve just recently graduated, having earned a BFA from Champlain College in Burlin

Volunteer Spotlight

July is here and big things are happening at the PR Food Center. We are continuing to work on the building and getting one step closer to seeing the vision we have for this organization become a reality. And, as with any non-profit organizations, we can't do it alone. It takes a community and individuals willing to give their time, their talents, and their donation dollars to keep us moving forward. Today, we want to thank the crew that came in this week to paint, demolish, and do dump runs for 2 days. It was hot, sweaty, tireless work but these teens and individuals from Living Innovations managed to bring it in a big way! Not only did they exceed our expectations, they were smiling, l

Food Stories: Part 3 KALE

The blessing of the harvest his time of year are swiss chard and kale. Everyone knows they are good for you, and they taste amazing when cooked properly. BUT, what do you do with them? I admit, I like kale, but my family doesn't (shocking I know!). I also don't know what to do with aside from the basics, like putting it in soup or making kale chips out of it. Pretty boring and basic stuff but I am feeling adventurous this week, and with a nice kale crop at most farm stands and farmers' markets right now, I decided I wanted to try something new. So I went to a kale expert--Lizzie Koltai-Price of Helios Horsepower Farm and asked her how to step out of my kale comfort zone. Her favorite go
