Beet Greens and Memories: FarmShare Senior Shares Her Thoughts

It's that time of year again! The annual summer program FarmShare for Homebound Seniors led by PR Food Center is here. Though seedlings are just being planted, conversations with new customers and last years seniors have been blooming. FarmShare for Homebound Seniors is a privately funded program that helps seniors who can't leave their home still enjoy fresh local produce by delivering it to their door. TMak and I had an opportunity to sit down with one of our seniors and ask her what makes being a FSHS customer so special. Here's what she had to say; "I love it- I love fresh veggies. Especially beet greens- Oh I love them!" We sat at her kitchen table. Though the day was a bit gray and on

Food Center Spotlight--Heather Pomerleau

Hi, I’m Heather Pomerleau and I’m the Board Secretary for Piscataquis Regional Food Center. When Steve and Erin came to my office back in the Summer of 2016 with plans to purchase the Agway building and create PRFC, their excitement was contagious. They asked me to be part of their vision for building a better Piscataquis. How could I refuse?! After a 30 year career in the Banking industry, with much of it spent at Bangor Savings Bank in Dover-Foxcroft, I have recently retired and finally have the time to follow my passions, most of all travel. I am very involved in my home town as Treasurer for both the town and the historical society. My husband, Shawn, and I live in Abbot.

"I know I should be looking at the nutrition labels when I am grocery shopping, but there is so much information it can leave me more confused than informed, especially with terms like "added sugar" and "total sugar" on the same label. What should I look for and focus on when I am comparing nutrition labels at the grocery store?" Many of us can relate, nutrition labels are overwhelming to say the least. They can often be intimidating even when you think you know what to look for. As with health, there is no one-size-fits-all model for label reading. Depending on your goals and health needs, what we look at on the nutrition label will vary. No matter who you are, sugar is one of the component

Piscataquis Passport Program and Veggie Vouchers

Today Merrilee Schoen, Project Manager at PR Food Center, sat down with Trisha Smith, Horticulture Aide at the UMaine Cooperative Extension Office of Piscataquis County, and talked about the 3rd year of the Piscataquis Passport Project. PR Food Center has been very active with this program and we are the sponsor and funder of the Veggie Voucher Program, which, as Trisha explains is the voucher system that allows children to get up to $30 in fresh fruits and veggies at the Dover Cove Farmers Market! Please enjoy this video and forgive poor TMak at her first attempt at editing a video! Let us know what you think. ~TMak and Merrilee

SoupStock 2019!

It's that time of year again! The 3rd Annual SoupStock is tomorrow at the Unitarian Universalist Church. There are a handful of tickets that can be purchased at the door for this exciting event, and don't forget the Silent Auction as well! What is SoupStock? SoupStock is a fundraiser for the UUSDF Food Cupboard located in Sangerville. This is their primary fundraiser for the year to help feed community members in need. The $25 ticket includes lots of good soups, a beautiful, hand thrown and painted bowl, dessert, and musical entertainment. The bowls are painted every year by local folks at the church, in community settings, and homes to make these one of a kind "soup-enirs". There is

Donating Acts of Service: April as National Volunteer Month

Happy April First everyone! Since the 1970's April has been celebrated as National Volunteer Month. Over at the Piscataquis Regional Food Center we are very aware of just how special and integral volunteering is to the multitude of our community-oriented projects. Piscataquis Regional Food Center has been quite lucky to have had consecutive Americorps VISTAs (Volunteers in Service to America) as well as an awesome team of volunteers to assist in many of our seasonal programs. Sometimes volunteering takes the form of donating time towards a particular project and sometimes volunteering means donating dollars to help fund projects. Piscataquis Regional Food Center acknowledges National Volunte

Our Mission is to improve food security in the Piscataquis Region by connecting people with sources of healthy food.
